Taking care of Pashmina
Pashmina shawls are woven entirely by hands, they are extremely delicate and could get spoilt when washing if proper care is not taken. Professional dry cleaning is the best way to clean the shawls. However, cleaning them in washing machines can distort the shape and the quality of the shawls. People in Nepal have preserved their pashmina garments without problems for centuries, although bugs & other creatures roam in abundance. Do not store in cedar trunks or closets. It is believed certain bugs are attracted to the wood. Store in a metal container with a few cloves wrapped in muslin. Families who have worn these garments for generations believe it keeps all bugs, moths, etc away.

PASHMINA IN NEPAL

Pashmina is known for its softness and warmth. Cashmere used for pashmina shawls was claimed to be of a superior quality, which was really due to the enhanced sheen and softness that the fabric (cashmere blended with silk) had. In the consuming markets, pashmina shawls were redefined as a shawl/wrap with cashmere and silk, notwithstanding the actual meaning of pashmina. ".
Pashmina from Nepal are the best in quality because of the conditions the mountain goats has adapted over centuries. The high Himalayas of Nepal has harsh, cold climate and in order to survive that the mountain goats have developed exceptionally warm and light fiber which might be slightly coarser than cashmere fibers obtained from lower region goats, but it is much warmer. To distinct Nepalese Pashmina, the Nepal Pashmina Industries Association has registered Trademark around the world called "Changra Pashmina
And Pashmina is a luxury, fine cashmere gathered from the undercoat of the Himalayan mountain goat that roams freely in the Himalayas. For centuries, the Royalties and the wealthiest women in Nepal and other neighboring countries have relied on the fine Pashmina products to adorn their shoulders. These Pashmina have been handed down from generation to generation as a treasure to be handled with care and flaunted at ease. Stylish women all over the world have used Pashmina as the icing on the cake of their designer wears. Himalayan Mountain goat, Carpa Hircus, sheds its winter coat every spring. One goat sheds approximately 3-8 ounces of the fiber. Since it can be collected only once a year and that too in such small amounts, Pashmina is not only a luxury item it is equally rare.

The woollen shawls made from wool in Kashmir find written mention in Indian texts between 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD. However, the founder of the cashmere wool industry is traditionally held to be the 15th century ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin, who introduced weavers from Central Asia.

Pashmina goats, LadakhCashmere shawls have been manufactured in Nepal and Kashmir for thousands of years. The test for a quality pashmina is warmth and feel. However, these days the word pashmina has been used too liberally and any scarves made from natural or synthetic fiber are sold as Pashmina creating confusion in the market.

WHAT IS PASHMINA

Pashmina refers to a type of fine cashmere wool and the textiles made from it.The name comes from Pashmine made from Urdu and Persian pashm ("wool"). The wool comes from changthangi or pashmina goat, which is a special breed of goat indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas in Nepal and northern India. Pashmina shawls are hand spun, woven and embroidered in Kashmir, and made from fine cashmere fibre.

Pashmina is the traditional name for the very finest grade of cashmere wool. Because of its unique softness and comforting warmth, it is the finest, softest, and warmest wool available anywhere. A luxurious pashmina shawl is the perfect fashion accessory for any season, event or occasion! You will feel as great as you look and a fashionable pashmina shawl is the perfect finishing touch to almost any outfit.

Pashmina is often inaccurately described as the highest quality of cashmere.  In fact there is no difference between cashmere and pashmina.  The highest quality of pashmina is the highest quality of cashmere, and the lowest pashmina is the lowest cashmere.  Pashmina and cashmere refer to the same thing.  The raw material comes from Tibet and Inner Mongolia.

As pashmina grows in popularity and is appreciated by more and more people around the world, standards have fallen.  To keep up with the world's demand, most pashmina shawls are now woven with very low grade pashmina, and most are no longer made on the traditional hand loom.
Pashmina and merino wool blended yarns are commonly exported as pure pashmina.
